Today’s Easy Cooking Ideas for Singles #52- Drumstick Curry or Mulakkada Kura could be a strange name for many of you. I served it to my American friend Jenna recently and when I mentioned drumsticks she thought I was talking of chicken drumsticks!

Moringa oleifera, or drumstick tree, is native to the tropics and is grown for its nutritious leaves and mineral-rich green fruit pods that hang from the tree. It has horseradish-like root and, hence, known in the west as horseradish tree.


The mature leaves, dried, powdered and are stored for quite a long time to be used like dried fenugreek leaves-kasuri methi, in curries or you can stir a spoon in buttermilk like I do. My friend Jayasree has the tree growing in her backyard and she shared this magical, powder packed Moringa powder. South Indians use it in sambar and make curries with it. I love to bite into the tender flesh in the pod and it becomes all the more tastier as it soaks in the curry or sambar.

Nutritionally, drumstick pods and leaves are good sources of carotene, calcium, phosphorus and vitamin C. The leaves, flowers and fruits of drumstick which are used as vegetable have great nutritional value.


2 Drumsticks cut into 2″ pieces

1 Onion finely chopped

1 Large Tomato, finely chopped

½ cup milk

1 tbsp chopped Coriander leaves

a sprig of Curry leaves

3/4 tsp Red chili powder

a pinch of Turmeric powder

1 Red chili

1/2 tsp Mustard seeds

Salt to taste

1-2 tbsp Oil


Method :

Heat oil in a pan and add the red chilli, now crackle the mustard seeds.

Add curry leaves and then add chopped onions and fry well until they turn pink.

Add the chopped drumsticks and simmer for 4-5 mins.

Now add chopped tomatoes and saute for another 2-3 mins until the tomatoes become mushy.Add a little water if the drumsticks are not done.

Add turmeric, chilli powder and salt. Add ½ cup milk and cook it covered for 5-6 mins until the drumstick pieces are done.

Garnish with Coriander and serve hot with steamed Rice or even Roti.

    Sounds fascinating! Haven’t used drumstick in a curry by itself. Must try:) It is another wonder veggie being packed with nutrients galore! I put drumstick leaves into pakoras and dal too…leaves are rich in iron
